Mr Cone Ice Cream Parlour, Monroe NY

I prepped the photos for this post ages ago, but then I had a problem…

Mr Cone in Monroe, New York is a really rather wonderful ice-cream parlour. I highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.

The problem is this: I can’t discover anything about its history! I chatted to one of the people who works there, she said the current owner bought it in the 70s.

But other than that?

Well, I’ve soured my extensive database of Drive In Ice Cream Parlours, trying to find a similarly designed building and sign somewhere else in the USA. Assuming that the sign is original, it wasn’t a Tastee-Freez, a Dairy Queen or any of the usual suspects. I’ve drawn a blank.

Here’s what I can say with certainty: (1) it was probably built in the 1950s; (2) Mr Cone sells pretty good ice cream and shakes. If you can add anything to this list, I’d love to hear from you!

Mr Cone Ice Cream Parlour
Address: 514 Route 17M, Monroe NY 10950
Hours: You know, I’m not sure. I forgot to look. I think they are 11am-9.30pm during the ice cream season, but don’t quote me on that.

  1. Hi Richard!

    I’m glad to see you found my dad’s ice cream parlour that has been an institution in Monroe for nearly 40years!

    My father, Joseph LoScalzo, has lived in the area since he was 16 yrs old and bought Mr. Cone in 1973. Now at the age of 66 he still works there every day. It is loved by the community and has become a part of everyone’s childhood. People come and say to my father, “I came here ever day in the summer when I was a kid and I remember coming with my little league team when we won or lost. Now I get to take my kids here, and you’re still here!” He loves being able to make people happy with an ice cream and a smile.

    Come visit and enjoy this local institution… and don’t forget to say hi to Joe!

  2. Here’s some info for you;

    Mr. Cone was called K’s Dairy Bar prior to 1973. At least that’s the name I remember. Diana – ask your dad if he remember’s it this way.

    I grew up there, used to walk there with friends, buy cones and baseball cards. I remember the name change, the sign change. Didn’t stop us from going there, though!

    It is, indeed, an “institution”! Diane – tell your dad “thanks for the memories”, from a kid, now a man, who grew up in Maple Knolls, Monroe.

    Richard – thanks for posting this. Again, fond memories.

  3. Mr. Cone close it’s doors some time in the late summer of 2017 if I remember correct. Rumor has it the property and adjacent property were sold. As of Jan 2018, both properties are fenced in. Even the Gulf gas station in the photo has been torn down and a Cumberland Farms gas station is being built. I believe the owner of Mr. Cone passed away. Sad to see this happen to a great place. I grew up in Monroe (1970’s thru the 80’s) and would always go to Mr. Cone. Glad I was able to bring my wife and children there.
