Manhatta and a Subway Ride

Here are two early pieces of footage of New York City.

First is Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler’s short film from 1921, Manhatta. Beautifully shot and historically significant, I was surprised to discover this predates Walter Ruttman’s similar Berlin: Symphony of the Great City by six years:

A change of pace: a trip on the NYC subway. This footage was shot on 21 May, 1905 on what’s now the 4/5/6 line. Watch it until the end to see the arrival in the 42nd Street station.
