Delicatessen Ghost Sign. Beacon, New York

I don’t know how I missed this sign on my previous visits to Beacon:

Delicaessen Ghost Sign. Beacon, New York

Although barely legible, you can make out the words “Italian” and “Delicatessen.” I’ve been able to fund out almost nothing about the sign itself, although it looks like it’s had a very interesting history. look, for instance, at the window built into the left side, or the center column of bricks stripped largely of paint. There’s a long-forgotten story here.

I checked out “Highway Displays Inc.,” the company who put their sign below the sign. Turns out they still exist. Today, they make billboards and don’t paint directly onto walls. They’ve been going since 1921, so that at least gives an early cut-off date for this sign.
